Family:
Sedimentary.
Formation: Formed from the skeletons of tiny sea creatures.
Texture: Fine grained; porous.
Colour: White, yellow, grey.
Location: Forms a layer under the Basalt of the Antrim Plateau. Particularly visible in the White Rocks at Portrush, Whitepark Bay, Larrybane Head and along the Antrim Coast Road.
Uses: Cement. Making soil less acidic.
Chemistry: Reacts with dilute acid by fizzing.
Notes: Can contain fossils such as belemnites. Often contains flint. Chalk is a pure form of limestone.
