Mournes
The
Mourne Mountains were designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural
beauty in 1986 and there is pressure to make this part of Northern
Ireland the first National Park in the province. The Mourne Wall,
seen here on the right of the photograph, runs for 35 kilometres and
took 18 years to build. It stands up to nearly 3 metres high and one
metre wide and connects the summits of 15 mountains including the
highest mountain in Northern Ireland: Slieve Donard.
