Crannog The small wooded island is a crannog, located in a lake in Connemara on the west coast of Ireland. Crannogs are usually artificial islands which are found throughout Ireland although the same term is used for the same structures in Scotland. They were occupied between Mesolithic and the Early Medieval period. At Craggaunowen in County Clare, Ireland, there is a full-scale reconstruction of a crannog in a typical lake-setting.
