Lignite

Lignite is also known as brown coal and is an intermediate stage between peat and coal. This sample is part of a core (hence its shape) drilled from the Ballymoney area of Northern Ireland where there are proposals to mine the fuel and burn it in a power station. This lignite was formed about 50 million years ago.
